Stick Carving

Forthill Farm proudly sponsors the N.I Stick Carvers Club

The Northern Ireland Stick Carvers Club was formed in 2003 by a group of active stick makers mainly in the Down/Armagh area.

The club was modelled on similar local stick making groups throughout Britain and adopted a constitution based on good practice in the associations there.

The objectives of the club are fairly simple,

  • To promote the craft of stick making and crook making
  • To extend fellowship among the members
  • To organise stick making competitions
  • To demonstrate the craft at Fairs and Shows

Membership of the club is open to anyone, male or female. The cost of membership has been deliberately set at minimum to cover the cost of administration and insurance only. At present membership is around forty but is expected to grow in the foreseeable future. Although there are no geographical limits to membership, so far there is a concentration of members living within a fifteen mile radius of Banbridge.

During the 2008 season the club organised stick competitions and demonstrations at a number of events including:

  • The B.A.S.C. Northern Ireland Game Fair at Ballywalter Park in April
  • Castlewellan Agricultural Show in July 2008

In addition four club competitions were organised that were confined to members of the association.

The Club is pleased to accept the invitation from The Mullahead Ploughing Society to organise an Open Stick Competition at the Ploughing Championships on 28th February 2015. The members wish to thank the Directors of the Mullahead Ploughing Society for their generous sponsorship in providing space in the marquee and a perpetual trophy for Best in Show along with rosettes for individual class winners.

It is the intention of the Club to include this annual competition in our programmed events list for future years.

The Forthill Farm Perpetual Cup will be presented to the overall winner of the following classes:
